#02 Time For Honesty
Changing the approach
Soo, starting this whole newsletter project, I set a goal to publish one newsletter every week. And then, after just two weeks… I broke the streak. 🫣
First, my birthday came up, and soon after I went on a little city trip to Florence, Italy (highly recommend!!) for a couple days.
I took these events as an excuse and told myself I just couldn’t find the time to write my newsletter posts.
But if I’m being completely honest, I just didn’t make the time. I didn’t prioritise it enough.
Did I beat myself up for that? No. Instead, I used the time off to rethink my approach with this newsletter.
My last post was very structured and divided into many little sections. But it felt a little too forced, and I got feedback from people saying that what they would like to read about is more my thoughts and experiences rather than shouting out other people or being overly educational (which I took as a compliment and highly appreciate, btw).
So, from now on, I want my posts to feel more like a stream of consciousness, just reflecting about my past experiences, impressions and thoughts. Because that’s what got me started in the first place – creating a space for me to be vulnerable in and share what’s going on in the grey matter of mine (also I hope it reads better).
After all, this newsletter is called “design quest”, and I wand to be sharing and discussing all the items I found on this metaphorical scavenger hunt.
Let’s dive in.
What’s been going on?
I have once again learned that the brain, and our ability to shift and focus our attention, are powerful things.
Because I am filling my brain with all things design lately, my attention is drawn to these things.
During my time in Italy, I noticed how I suddenly started analysing restaurant menus and their layout, studied logos I saw on store fronts and challenged myself to identify fonts whenever they caught my eye.
I find it kind of funny how selective my attention has become. It’s like when you’re missing your period for a couple of days and all of a sudden you only start seeing pregnant women and parents everywhere. 😆
Have you also experienced this (with whatever topic)?
Learning design
In terms of studying design and learning more about the field, I took a course called “Fundamentals of Graphic Design” on Coursera.
It was fun diving into the very basics and the theoretical background of design and learning more about typography, composition, and imagemaking (and btw, it’s free – so if you’re interested, definitely recommend!).
Besides that, I am still working on building my portfolio and try to be as creative and adventurous as possible.
It’s taking time, and can be frustrating if you’re not 100% happy with the outcome, but I’m trying to focus on all the things I’m learning during the process.
Check out my instagram if you’d like to get a glimpse into my recent work.
